Az angoltanulásról jut eszembe… (2) – Turkálás a kincsek (szó)tárában…. ):o)

***

put on beef – felszed pár kilót /putanbÍf/

***

parti /pAti/

Fura? Az! Az angolok mégis a kötél – rope /rÓup/ analógiájára képzelik a nyúlós bort, aminek a kifejezésére használják.

***

KN-…. = /n-…./

… ha azt haljuk /nEk/, akkor még szükség lehet egy kis időre, hogy kibogozzuk, miről is van szó, főleg, ha a nyak sebészeti beavatkozásairól van szó. Merthogy ez a kiejtés két szóhoz is kapcsolódik: knack, és neck.

knack: fortély, ügyesség, mesterfogás, műfogás;

neck: nyak.

***

pall – law:

… Ha az angolok azt hallják PÓLÓ, akkor előfordulhat, hogy valami ilyesmit értenek alatta: „olyan törvény, ami felett szemet hunynak”; vagy „a palástolás joga”; vagy „a törvény ellaposítása”. A következő miatt:

pall /pÓl/: szemfedél, palást; unalmassá, válik, ellaposodik; és

law //: törvény, jog.

***

That shirt is amazing. /dEtsŐtizömÉzin/ = A(ma)z az ing csodálatos.

… Ebben a mondatban talán semmi furcsát nem lehet felfedezni. De nézze csak meg jobban! Még jobban! Nem …? Na jó. Hogy van angolul az, hogy amaz? = that /dEt/. És az ing? = shirt /sŐt/. Vagyis az, hogy „amaz ing” valóban úgy van, hogy „that shirt”. Persze valaki azt mondhatná, hogy ez úgy helyes, ha azt mondjuk: ’That shirt’ in Hungarian is „amaz ing”. Nos, neki is igaza lenne!

***

Thin /szin/ - think /szink/

Gondoljunk egy vékony, vagy soványK’-ra. Hogy van ez angolul? : thin-k. /szin – ’sz’ pöszén ejtve/; think /szink – ’sz’ pöszén ejtve/– gondolni.

***

Thin /szin/ - thing /szing/ (’sz’ pöszén ejtve)

Bevezetésként rögtön a BS-Keyword módszer* egyik egyszerűsített formájára hoznék néhány példát, amik részben valóban elhangzottak az óráimon, néhányat azonban direkte jelen íráshoz „költöttem”. Bíztatok minden tanulót, hogy bizonyos szavakat akár ezzel a módszerrel gyakoroljon be.

Jelen módszer lényege, hogy az adott szót belefogalmazzuk abba a mondatba, vagy minidialógusba, amiben a szó jelentése felmerül, úgy, hogy a szó éppen tanulandó jelentését is belefoglaljuk. Mindezeket tökéletesen elegendő szóban gyakorolni.

 ***

-   Mit jelent az, hogy „I don’t know.”? /ájdonnÓ/

-   Nem tudom.

-   Köszi!

 ***

Ebből a mondatból minden szót ismerek, DE a BUT nem jut az eszembe! /bát – rövid á-val!/

 ***

Engem most az érdekel, hogy itt mit jelent a ME! /mÍ/

 ***

A TOO –t TÚL gyakran keverik össze a TO –val, és a TWO –val IS. /tÚ, tu, tÚ/

 ***

 ***

-   Mit jelent az, hogy NOW? /nAu/

-   MOST nem jut az eszembe.

 ***

Mit kell CSINÁLNI a DO –val a jelen idejű kérdésekben? /dÚ/

 ***

-   OUCH, I’ve cut myself!”. Mit jelent ebben a mondatban az OUCH? /Aucs, ÁjvkátmÁjszElf/ (=’Jajj, megvágtam magam!’)

-   JAJJ, ez sose jut az eszembe!

 ***

Az óra VÉGén még beszélünk az END jelentéséről! /=end/

THE RECORDING OF WORDS

A szavak rögzítése

(…) Cohen and Aphek (1980) claim to have had some success with what is known as the keyword technique.

Cohen és Aphek (1980) azt állítja, hogy sikereket értek el egy „kulcsszó technika”-ként ismert módszerrel.

In this, students are trained to associate words imagistically.

Ebben a diákoknak azt tanítják, hogy képzeletben szavakat asszociáljanak, kössenek össze.

Students are asked to think of a word in their first language that sounds similar to the second language word.

A diákokat megkérték, hogy gondoljanak egy szóra az anyanyelvükön, amelyik hasonlóan hangzik, mint egy második, vagy célnyelvű szó.

The two words are then pictured in some way together.

A két szavat aztán valamilyen módon képileg összekötik.

Thus, in trying to recall the second language word the student recalls the image, and thereby the sound of the target word.

Így, megpróbálva felidézni a célnyelvű szót a diák felidézi a képet, és ez által a célnyelvű szó hangzását is.

An example from Nation (1982) may serve as an illustration:

Nation példája jól szemléltetheti a módszert:

„… if a learner wants to master the Indonesian word pintu, which means door, he wouls think o fan English word (the keyword) which sounds like pintu, or part of pintu for example, pin.

… ha a tanuló el akarja sajátítani az indonéz pintu szót, ami ajtót jelent (angolul door), akkor egy olyan angol szóra kell gondolnia (ez lesz a kulcsszó) amelyik úgy hangzik, mint a pintu, vagy legalább a pintu egyik része, például pin (ami magyarul gombostűt jelent).

Then he would form a mental image of a pin and a door interacting with each other. pp.25-26.”

Aztán egy képzeletbeli képet kell alkotnia a gombostűről és az ajtóról, amelyben valamiféle kapcsolatot hoz létre közöttük.

Students’ word-recording strategies is an area that has received very little attention. This could, however, prove to be a worthwhile area of research. …(…) (pp.309.)

A tanulók szótanulási stratégiája olyan terület, amely eddig még csak csekély figyelmet kapott. Ez azonban nagyon ígéretes kutatási területnek bizonyulhat. (309.o.)

10. fejezet – További csodák a mnemotechnikával

THE KEYWORD METHOD

A kulcsszó módszer (160.-162.o.)

Richard Atkinson and Michael Raugh have conducted several experiments evaluating the effectiveness of visual associations in learning Spanish and Russian vocabulary.

Richard Atkinson és Michael Raugh már több kísérletet is lefolytatott annak érdekében, hogy spanyol és orosz szavak tanulásával kapcsolatban értékelje a vizuális asszociációk hatékonyságát.

(…) Their method, which they call the „keyword” method, consists of two steps.

Az ő módszerük, amit ők „kulcsszó” módszernek hívnak, két lépést tartalmaz.

The first step is to associate the spoken foreign word with an English word or phrase that sounds approximately like the foreign word (…), or that sounds like only a part of the foreign word.

Az első lépés az, hogy a (célnyelvű) szó kiejtett formáját asszociáljuk (=összekötjük) egy olyan anyanyelvű szóval vagy kifejezéssel, ami megközelítőleg ugyanúgy hangzik, mint az idegen szó (…), vagy amelyik úgy hangzik, mint az idegen szó egy része.

The second step in the keyword method is to associate the keyword with the English word, using interacting visual imagery.

A kulcsszó módszer második lépése az, hogy a kulcsszót egy vizuális kép segítségével asszociáljuk az idegen nyelvi szó anyanyelvi jelentésével.

(…) You may recognize the keyword method as being equivalent to the use of substitute words for abstract terms, as discussed in Chapter 5.

Esetleg itt feltűnhet, hogy a kulcsszó technika egyenrangú az absztrakt szavak konkrét szavakra cserélésével, mint ahogyan azt az 5. Fejezetben is láthattuk.

The following criteria appear to be important in selecting each key word:

A következő kritériumok fontosak lehetnek a kulcsszavak kiválasztásában:

1. The keyword should sound as much as possible like part (not necessarily all) of the foreign word;

(1) A kulcsszónak a lehető legnagyobb mértékben kell úgy hangzania mint az idegen szó egy része (nem kell szükségszerűen a szó egészére hasonlítania);

2. it should be easy to form a memorable imagery link between the keyword and the English word;

(2) könnyűnek kell lennie egy emlékezetes képszerű kapcsolatot képezni a kulcsszó és az anyanyelvi szó között;

3. the keyword should be unique (different from the other keywords used int he test vocabulary).

(3) a kulcsszó egyedülállónak kell lennie (ami annyit jelent, hogy ugyanazon megtanulandó szócsoportban különböznie kell a többitől!).

USING KEYWORDS FOR SPANISH AND RUSSIAN

A kulcsszó használata spanyol és orosz szavaknál

People in one study learned a Spanish vocabulary of 60 to 120 words using different methods.

Egy vizsgálat során egy csoport spanyol szavakat tanult különböző módszerekkel, és 60-120-as tételszámú szócsoportokkal.

The keyword method was the most effective technique in all cases.

Minden esetben a kulcsszó technika bizonyult a leghatékonyabb technikának.

(…) using visual imagery to associate the keywords scored 88% (…); using the keywords without imagery scored about 30%.

(…) vizuális képeket asszociáltak a kulcsszavakhoz, és így 88%-os eredményt értek el (…); a kulcsszó módszert használva, de ezúttal vizuális képek nélkül csak 30%-ot értek el.

(…) the use of keywords appears to be a natural technique for many people.

(…) úgy tűnik, hogy a kulcsszavak használata sokak számára természetes technika.

People learned 40 new words each day for three days, for a total of 120 words.

Az emberek 40 új szót tanultak meg naponta 3 napon át, összesen tehát 120 szót.

Recall was tested by hearing the Russian words and writing the English words.

A visszaidézést úgy tesztelték, hogy az orosz szavakat hallva le kellett írni az angol szavakat.

The keyword group performed (…) averaging 72% vs. 46% (using own methods).

A kulcsszavakat használó csoport átlagosan 72%-ot teljesített, szemben a 46%-kal, amit a saját módszerrel tanulók értek el.

(…) The keyword group performed 43% vs. 28% on an unexpected recall test about six weeks later.

Egy előre nem jelzett visszaidézési teszt alkalmával, amit 6 héttel később végeztek, a kulcsszavakat használó csoport 43%-ot ért el, szemben a kontroll csoport 28%-ával.

The keyword group remembered about 50% more words both in the immediate tests and the delayed tests.

A kulcsszavakat használó csoport kb. 50%-kal több szóra emlékezett mind az azonnali, mind a késleltetett tesztekben.

Keywords can be used to form verbal associations as well as visual associations.

A kulcsszavak használhatók mind szóbeli asszociációk, mind vizualizációs asszociációk képzéséhez.

People have used the keywords to form sentences connecting each foreign word with its English equivalent.

Az emberek használták a kulcsszavakat olyan mondatok képzéséhez, amik összekapcsolják az idegen nyelvű szavakat az angol megfelelőikkel.

(…) The most effective strategy for learning appears to be to try and form an image, but relate the two words with a phrase or sentence if an image does not come quickly to mind.

A leghatékonyabb tanulási stratégiának az tűnik, ha megpróbálunk olyan vizuális képet alkotni, amely utal mindkét szóra kifejezéssel vagy mondattal, ha a kép nem idéződik fel gyorsan.

CONCLUSIONS ABOUT KEYWORDS

A kulcsszavakkal kapcsolatos konklúziók

1. It is better for the teacher to construct and provide keywords than to have the learners generate their own, especially for beginners.

1. Jobb, ha a tanár alkot és ad kulcsszavakat a diákoknak – különösen a kezdők esetében –, mint hogy őket kérné arra, hogy sajátokat alkossanak.

2. However, it is better for the learners to generate their own associative images between the keyword and the English word than for the teacher to provide them.

2. Azonban jobb a diákoknak, ha saját vizuális asszociációkat formálnak a kulcsszó és az angol szó között, mintsem a tanár adná azokat a diákoknak.

3. The keywords do not need to approximate the full sound of the foreign word.

Nincs szükség arra, hogy a kulcsszó az idegen szó kiejtését tökéletesen megközelítse.

In fact, when keywords spanned the full sound of the foreign word (…), people did not do as well as when only one-syllable keywords were used, perhaps because they had too much to remember.

Valójában, amikor a kulcsszavak teljességgel megközelítették az idegen szó kiejtését (…), az emberek nem jegyezték meg őket olyan hatékonysággal, mint amikor csak egy szótagos kulcsszavak használtak, talán azért nem, mert akkor túl sok mindent kellett volna megjegyezniük.

4. The keyword method may prove useful only in the early stages of learning a language, for some kinds of words more than for others, and for some languages more than others.

Valószínű, hogy a kulcsszó módszer elsősorban a nyelvtanulás korai szakaszában bizonyul hasznosnak; bizonyos szavakkal kapcsolatban inkább, mint másokkal kapcsolatban; és bizonyos nyelvekben inkább, mint másokban.

The research is still in the early stages.(!)

A kutatások még mindig csak a korai stádiumban vannak.(!)

(…) (The keyword method) does not interfere with the correct pronouncation, and in fact, may even help it.

(A kulcsszó módszer) nem zavarja a helyes kiejtés megtanulását, és valójában inkább segíti azt.

Once an item has been thoroughly learned, it becomes to mind immediately and the learner is rarely aware of the related keyword unless he makes conscious effort to recall it.

Ha egyszer már teljesen megtanult valaki egy nyelvtani egységet, akkor ez közvetlenül felidézhetővé válik, és a tanuló ritkán van tudatában a megtanulást korábban segítő kulcsszónak, amit néha még akkor sem tud felidézni, ha megpróbálja azt konkrétan felidézni.

The retrieval time is not affected by the method; it takes no longer to recall a word via a keyword mediator than to recall a word learned without keyword.

A felidézési időt nem befolyásolja a módszer; vagyis nem telik több időbe felidézni egy szót a kulcsszó módszerrel megtanulva, mint a nélkül.
